1. Develop production techniques that benefit the environment.
  • Establish 2 additional ITO EN-owned tea plantations. With direct ownership, ITO EN will be able to reinforce its environmental standards.
  • Reduce the weight of individual PET Bottles in order to cut energy consumption and waste generation.
  • Develop additional products constructed with UTL (Used Tea Leaves) recycling technology.
  • ITO EN successfully opened 2 additional tea plantations in FY 2006, reducing its dependence on outside entities.

  • The weight of ITO EN 16.9 fl oz PET bottles has been reduced by 0.16 grams from the previous design.

  • ITO EN successfully developed 8 new products made with Used Tea Leaves.
2. Promote the purchase of recycled products throughout the company.
  • Develop a system to purchase recycled products for office use (i.e., recycled paper for printing documents, etc.).
  • Actively purchase more recycled products for business use.
  • The percentage of recycled goods purchased for business use is now 38.8% of total goods purchased.
  • ITO EN purchased 140 new Vending Machines that don't use Freon. ITO EN has been continuously researching its vendor partners to insure that it is purchasing products from environmentally-conscious companies.
3. Develop environmentally friendly waste disposal methods, and expand Used Tea Leaves recycling technology into more products.
  • Continue to develop efficient and environmentally- friendly waste disposal methods.


  • Improve the recycling rate for business-related waste disposal. (At ITO EN Ltd. corporate headquarters the present recycling rate is 90%.)
  • All branches were encouraged to create their own in-house rules and regulations in order to eliminate excess waste and streamline production.
  • As of the end of FY 2006, 100% of business- related waste at ITO EN Ltd. corporate headquarters was recycled.
4. Reduce energy and resource usage
  • Decrease the amount of electric consumption from sales/ business activities.
  • Lower the rate of all production plants' electric consumption by 2% compared to the previous year.
  • Reduce the rate of all production plants' oil fuel consumption by 2% compared to the previous year.
  • Compared to 2004, the 2006 energy consumption rate was reduced by 5%.
  • Continue to develop economic driving practices to eliminate fuel waste.


  • Continued to promote "Warm-Biz" and "Cool-Biz" policies (while working, dressing casually for comfort in summer months and heavier for the winter) to reduce energy consumption by climate control devices.
  • During summer months, ITO EN thermostats were set to maintain the offices at 82ยบ F.
  • Electrical consumption from production activities at ITO EN's Sagara plant increased by 11.1% compared to last year. (ITO EN failed to decrease electrical consumption due to the installation of new manufacturing equipment).
  • Rate of electrical consumption from total production operations in Japan was 4.2% lower in FY 2006 than FY 2005
5. Reduce CO2 emissions
  • Reduce CO2 emissions from sales related activities by 10% compared to the last year.
  • ITO EN Ltd added 35 hybrid vehicles to their fleet in FY 2006.
  • ITO EN Ltd planted trees on the roof and 7th Floor at the office building in Tokyo's Taito district.
  • Total CO2 emissions related to sales were 8.8% lower in 2006.
6. Encourage PET bottle recycling
  • Urge recycling of gathered plastic bottles from each branch.
  • 196 out of 201 branches recycled gathered plastic bottles.
7. Build an environmental management system
  • Improve ITO EN environmental management systems. Advise business partners on environmental management techniques.
  • ITO EN's Japanese headquarters received ISO 14001 certification.
8. Participate in community activities.
